How do I know which surgery is right for me?
When meeting members of our team, you will learn more about the different types of surgery and the benefits and risks. These discussions, along with your individual goals and medical history, will help you determine which surgery is best for you.
How long does it take to schedule surgery?
The timeframe for a surgical date is different for each patient. In our practice the average time is three to four months. However, some insurance companies require six months or more of supervised weight loss. We will work with you to help you through this process.
Can weight loss surgery help other physical conditions?
Yes, weight loss surgery can improve or resolve many obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and acid reflux disease.
What tests will I need before surgery?
Certain basic tests are done prior to surgery: All patients in our program receive nutrition education, a psychological evaluation and blood work. Other tests that may be ordered are chest X-ray, electrocardiogram, pulmonary function testing, echocardiogram, sleep studies, GI evaluation, sports medicine evaluation and cardiology evaluation.
What can I do before surgery?
Weight loss: We will help you develop new eating habits and lose weight, even before surgery, by following the recommendations of our dietitians. It may surprise you to learn that one of the first places you lose weight is in your liver. In addition to making surgery safer, losing weight helps prepare you for the lifestyle changes necessary to have long-term success.
Exercise: Get your heart and lungs in the best possible shape by doing whatever physical exercise you can tolerate. Consult with your primary care provider to determine what exercise is appropriate for you. Starting an exercise program before surgery is also a key to keeping a regular exercise program following surgery.
What do I need to do to be successful after surgery?
The basic rules are simple and easy to follow:
- Follow postoperative dietary guidelines carefully. Patients who commit to these guidelines have fewer complications and achieve better long-term results.
- When cleared by your healthcare provider, incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Just 30 minutes a day, five times a week will increase your weight loss and help you achieve your goals. Weight resistance exercise can be added as instructed by your care provider.
