CMMC Offers Comprehensive Osteoporosis Screening

Osteoporosis, a disease marked by gradual weakening of the bones, can rob women and men of their mobility and independence. The good news about this disease, however, is that its damaging effects are preventable.

Central Maine Medical Center provides state-of-the-art bone density screening services at its Osteoporosis Center, and with its Mobile Osteoporosis Van, which screens patients at Bridgton and Rumford hospitals, and in other central and western Maine communities.

The screening uses low-dose x-rays of the lower back and one hip. It is painless and takes less than 15 minutes to complete. The scans are reviewed and sent to the patient's referring physician.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation generally recommends bone density scans for all women aged 65 and older, postmenopausal women who break a bone, and postmenopausal women with a known risk factor, such as having a small frame or a parent or sibling with the disease.
